This is an awesome new idea that could be the future of furniture. At the moment it is just a project for a Japanese industrial design student, but Landpeel is just really, really cool. The idea is basically kind of like a mat that you can move and manipulate to suit the kind of furniture that you need for that moment.

This kind of configurability has never been tried before, but Landpeel shows the way forward. Before, traditionally, you buy some furniture, put it in a room and then just leave it. Sure you can move the furniture about, but it is still basically still the same furniture. With Landpeel, you can change it to match the needs of the moment.

As you can see, this new omni-furniture can be changed to suit what you want to be doing in a room at any given time. From relaxing with snacks, to getting on with a bit of work on your lap-top, the same furniture is just not as applicable to both.

If this idea gets taken up and put into production it could definitely change the way we think about home furnishings. Just imagine how awesome it would be to have a room, the room seems empty, there is just a mat on the floor. You can do your yoga, sit around cross-legged in a big circle, dance, whatever. Then you need the room to be suitable for some other activity, you just grab bits of the floor, move it around, and bingo, the ideal furniture for that moment. Pretty awesome.

The Japanese industrial design student in question is Shin Yasmashita. You can see the personal website of this creative genius here. As you can see there is nothing up there except an email address, so if you make, distribute or sell furniture – make sure you email and try to secure a contract so that this can go from superb idea to superb consumer product.
