This year’s London Marathon is just around the corner. The event facilitates one of the planets most epic fundraising efforts, and that is one of its positive effects. Another is to encourage ordinary people to start running. Running is a great way to improve your health and fitness. Being a slightly lardaceous gentleman my doctor advised me to lose some weight. The way I chose was to start running, I have been doing it for a while now, and have had some good results.
The great thing about running is that anyone can do it. You don’t need to be in preparation for a marathon to get serious about running. Here are a few tips that I have picked up since I started:
1. Eat right
You should be eating one gram of protein and 5 grams of carbohydrate for every kilo of bodyweight you have. Try to eat something as soon as you finish your run as well.
2. Run regularly
As with everything the key to getting better is persistence. Try to set a strict goal for how often you should be running. Once a day is not too much, but don’t be afraid to set a more modest target if you think it will be easier to stick to.
3. Hydrate
Make sure you keep up your fluid levels by drinking water before during and after your run. If your run is over 15 minutes you should consider drinking a sports drink. Gatorade is my particular favourite , but I find it hard to get hold of in the UK.
4. Get good shoes
Running can really pound your feet, invest in a good pair of running shoes. Not only will your feet and knees be protected but you will feel encouraged to keep up the regular exercise if you have spent a significant amount of money on specialist footwear.
5. Don’t go it alone
Probably the most useful thing you can do as a runner starting out is to find other people to run with you. Having a training buddy to run regularly with will be something that will keep you both motivated. Also try to find a running club, not only will the social aspect make it more fun but you will have the chance to learn from experienced runners.
There are more tips to come, but right now I’ve got to get my vest on and hit the street for my afternoon jog!
