Father’s day is approaching fast, the third Sunday in June in most places, including Britain and the states. Of course the Internet is available internationally, so if you are reading this in Serbia Russia, Romania or South Korea then you are too late!

It is a pretty new celebration day actually, only being started in 1910. This was in the US of course, but it took until 1972 for the holiday to be signed into US law by colourful president Richard Nixon. Now it is 2010, and the question is, just what exactly to get for your old man this June.

If you happen to be 6, then the answer should probably be something you make. A picture made with macaroni stuck onto construction paper for instance. If you are an adult, it is not so simple. Florists would no doubt like people to treat Father”s day much like Mother’s day, and splash out and get some flowers delivered. While this might be greeted with a show of gratitude from some men, really this is not what they want.

Quite often a great gift idea for a father is a bottle of something. This could either be humorous, perhaps a bottle of ”Daddy’s Sauce”, or something a little more special and costly. Beware of purchasing wine for a wine connoisseur, and the same goes for whisky. That said, you can”t go far wrong with a nice single malt.

June is, of course, summertime, and that is the season of barbecues. What better way to celebrate Father”s day than by throwing the beloved paterfamilias a BBQ? Splash out on some T-Bone steaks and really kick things up a notch. One other thing to consider is what your father sacrificed in order to have a family. Be considerate and thoughtful offspring and get your Dad a day driving the sports car he could never afford because he had you! Deep down you know how much he would love to drive a Ferrari!
